Born in Germany in 1877, Burkard immigrated to the United States and enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. During a fierce engagement with the Pillager Band of Leech Lake Ojibwe, Burkard braved heavy fire to rescue and treat wounded soldiers. He was the only non-combatant decorated for this engagement.
After his heroic service, Burkard continued his military career, eventually reaching the rank of Major and serving through World War I. Upon retirement, he became a prominent citizen of Rome, New York, serving on the Board of Education and remaining active in civic life.
